Technology has improved our lives in a multitude of ways. It has tremendously helped in sharing the gospel and fulfilling the great commission, it has given us unparalleled access to Scriptures, and Bible study is easier than ever, thanks to many free excellent online resources.
Here are my favorite tools and resources (in no particular order) that have been assisting me in my walk with Christ and helping me grow spiritually.
Phone Apps
1. The You Version Bible
This app is probably the most popular Bible app out there with over 2M downloads. It has the whole Bible available in many translations, and you can highlight, take notes, bookmark, make graphic verses, and more. It also features many reading plans and devotionals that you can do with friends or alone. I love to use it to look up verses or words in the Bible, compare different translations, or find a devotional.
2. Grace to You
Grace to You is the teaching ministry of John MacArthur, a thorough expositor of the Word. This app gives you access to all his teachings, which include verse-by-verse teaching of every book of the New Testament and some books of the Old Testament. The sermons are categorized by Scripture and topic, which makes for easy navigation. One of my favorite features of the app is the transcripts of every sermon.
3. Ligonier |Android | IOS
Ligonier is the teaching fellowship of the late R.C Sproul, a great theologian, and preacher. This app contains al the teachings of Sproul as well as blog posts, daily videos, and devotional readings, and more. The app also allows you to log in and purchase teaching series and conference messages featuring many teachers, pastors, and theologians.
4. RefNet
RefNet or Reformation Network is a Christian radio by Ligonier Ministries, founded by R.C Sproul. It is a 24-hour radio that broadcasts solid teachings and preaching from reformed theologians such as John MacArthur, Alistair Begg, R.C Sproul, Steven Lawson, etc. They also play music, audiobooks, Scripture readings, and news. I like that they have a weekly schedule of the programs so you can know when to tune in and a built-in sleep timer.
5. Blue letter Bible |Android| IOS
Blue Letter Bible is an excellent app for Bible study and contains every bible tool you need for a compelling study. Besides having the Bible in different translations, the app has daily reading plans, translation comparison, commentaries (audio and written), Greek/Hebrew concordance, cross-references, and dictionaries. You can also make notes, bookmark verses, highlight, and share them.
6. Truth for Life |Android| IOS
Truth for life is the Bible-teaching ministry of Alistair Begg, senior pastor of Cleveland Parkside Church. The app features Begg’s sermons that you can browse by date, alphabetically, or by Scripture. The app also has devotionals, blog posts, and daily Bible reading plans.
7. Sermon Audio
Sermon Audio contains a vast library of sermons from various preachers around the world. The sermons are neatly organized by category, speaker, Bible, topic, and date. And it also has a search function. It is quite useful when you want to hear a sermon on a topic or Scripture. As they feature sermons from churches all around the world, they have some sermons in different languages. They also have transcriptions.
8. Breakaway
If you are a college student, young adult, or young at heart, this app is for you! Breakaway ministry is an on-campus Bible study founded by Gregg Matte at Texas A&M University. This ministry is very dear to me because it was while attending Breakaway that I came to know Jesus and became a Christian. The app features teachings by Pastor Ben Stuart, and current director Timothy Ateek as well as some guest speakers. They also live-stream the bible study at 9 PM CST every Tuesdays.
9. Streetlights
Streetlights is an audio Bible with dramatic/poetic readings of the Bible with music playing in the background. It’s a unique and creative way to hear the Word of God and interact with it. They also have short videos about biblical themes. I enjoy listening to the Bible to the rhythm of the music. My only drawback is that they use the NLT version. At the moment of this writing, they have completed the NT.
10. Got questions
Got question is a ministry dedicated to answering questions about the Bible and life from a biblical perspective. The app has over 6,000 questions and answers about the Bible, and they are organized by topic. It also has a built-in search function, and you can bookmark articles for later or quick access. You can also ask questions that may not have been answered or peruse popular questions. I mostly use the website, but the app is cool too.
11. PrayerMate
This is my most recent find. At first, I was skeptical of using an app for prayer, but after reading a glowing review from Tim Challies, I decided to give it a try, and I am glad I did. Prayer Mate has improved my prayer life! With the app, you can create different lists to pray. For example, family, walk with God, Church, etc. Every day the app generates different items from your list so you can pray over them. So, every day you may pray for something different. It also features prayer prompts from the Bible and others. You can also set reminders so you don’t forget to pray.
12. Bible memory
Scripture memorization is an excellent discipline for Christians, and Bible Memory (formerly Scripture Typer) is a great app that helps in that endeavor. This is the first bible memory app I have ever used, and I chose it because of its built-in review system that prompts me to review verses that I have already memorized and retained them over time. The frequency gradually increases with each successful review, and you can also set your preferred review dates. It doesn’t have as many features as some other scripture memorization apps, but less is more.
13. Biblical Training
I discovered this when I was looking to learn hermeneutics. This app (and website) provides free 2100 hours of biblical instruction from world-class bible professors. They have classes for new believers, pastors, and everyone in between. They offer courses on Theology, Biblical interpretation, apologetics, and much more. Biblical training is not a seminary; however, they offer diplomas and certificates.
14. A Journey Toward Jesus | Android | IOS
If you are into games, you should give this app a try. It follows the story of a man named Eliab who is seeking a preacher named Jesus to heal his sick sister. On the way, he interacts with different characters, travels the same paths as Jesus, and many challenges. This game is primarily a trivia game and features over 2000 questions that will test your knowledge of the Bible. It’s also a lot of fun.
YouTube Channels
YouTube has greatly enriched my spiritual life, whether it’s sermons or videos, I have found many content and channels that have been beneficial in my spiritual life. Here are some channels I follow and their bio.
15. The Beat by Allen Parr
“Biblical Encouragement and Truth (The B.E.A.T) is an online video ministry dedicated to communicating God’s word in a creative, practical, and easy-to-watch format. These short 5-minutes-or-less videos seek to address questions most Christians have and to provide a forum for people to discuss various theological concepts and ideas. This channel also encourages people by challenging them to live out their true calling as a Christian. We release a new video every Tuesday and Friday.”
16. Wretched
“Wretched TV and Radio are hosted by Todd Friel. On the show, you will see and hear live witnessing encounters and discussions of tough theological issues and various topics in the Christian community.”
17. The Bible project
The Bible Project is a ministry that makes short animated videos about all the books of the Bible. The videos are all 8 to 10 minutes, and best of all, it is free! Every video explains the text, its structure, theme, etc. Their mission is “to help people experience the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. We are a crowd-funded non-profit, creating videos that walk through the narrative of the Bible, book-by-book, and theme-by-theme.”
18. What Shall I Cry Ministries
WSICM is “a ministry dedicated to maintaining and preserving the integrity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as given to us in Holy Scriptures.”
I recently discovered this discernment ministry, and it’s through it that I realized I haven’t been listening to sound Christ-centered preaching. I particularly like the comparison videos in which they compare a pastor exposing the Word and making it about Christ against another pastor preaching anything but the Word and making it about us.
19. When We Understand the Text
“When We Understand the Text (WWUTT) is an online ministry preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and rebuking those who contradict it (Titus 1:9). We feature hundreds of short videos addressing dozens of Bible topics, and a podcast with 20 minutes of Bible teaching five days a week, enjoyed by millions of people around the world—and it’s all for free! “
20. Dan Musselman
“Christian instrumental piano music to bring peace to your day.”
I love this channel; Dan plays so beautifully! I play his music when I am writing, reading, studying, sometimes praying, etc.
I mention a lot of resources but remember that as fantastic as they are, they should never replace your Bible study time. Use them as a supplement, not your main diet.
