The Pursuit of God: A 31-Day Experience

A.W. Tozer is one of my favorite authors. His books Knowledge of the Holy and The Pursuit of God have been an enormous blessing in my Spiritual life. So I was thrilled to discover The Pursuit of God: A 31-Day experience; a new special edition, that transformed Tozer’s classic into a 31-day devotional. But it is not your average devotional; this one is an illustrated devotional!

Every entry features black and white images and other visual effects which enrich the book. Furthermore, there are also Bible verses and quotations inserted throughout the pages. I quite enjoyed these additions! Devotionals can sometimes be a tad dull, but the graphics made the reading more exciting.

As for the content itself, it is replete with biblical truths (well, it is Tozer). Since the book got split into 31 days, it is a different feel from the original one. Nevertheless, it is still a delightful read. Here is my review of the original version.

“In Pursuit of God, Tozer shows us what it means to pursue God in our ever-busy and crowded lives. Tozer was concerned that evangelicals spent much time studying the Holy scriptures without taking time to be still and experience God’s closeness and presence. He says, “The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His presence, and may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts.” Consequently, Tozer wrote this book so believers hungry to experience God and enjoy His sweet presence could find Him.

Tozer did a fantastic job of showing us how to experience God’s presence. He was not teaching mysticism and sensuality, as is common in many churches today. His was biblical teaching on knowing God experientially.

I was familiar with Matthew 6:33, which says to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first, but I never realized what it entailed. This book shone a light on it and taught me what it looks like to pursue God genuinely. The Pursuit of God also made me realize that I long for worldly things more than for God. And this conviction alone made this book worth it. Now, I have this hunger and longing to know God, pursue Him, and pray that it surpasses every other desire in my life.”

Overall, this devotional is an incredibly cool edition of an incredibly fantastic book, and I highly recommend it! I also recommend reading the original version if you have not yet.

Moody Publishers gave me a complimentary copy, and this is my honest review.
