I read fewer books in 2022 than the previous year, 49 compared to 85. But though I did not read as much as I wanted (my goal was 60), I still read many excellent books that enriched my spiritual life. I have narrowed down my ten favorite books and listed them in the order that I read them below. These are my all-star-five-star-will-read-again books of 2022!

1. R.C. Sproul: Defender of the Reformed Faith – Nate Pickowicz
If you are like me, you may wonder if it’s worth reading this book if you have already read R.C. Sproul: A Life by Stephen Nichols, published last year. The answer is a resounding yes! With much already written there and in other places, Pickowicz takes a unique approach by looking mainly at R.C. Sproul’s doctrinal battles and how he handled them. And it made for an edifying and entertaining read! (See my full review here!).
2. Respectable Sins – Jerry Bridges
Overall, I found this book to be eye-opening and thought-provoking. It made me consider many of my behaviors in light of Scripture and see whether they are sinful. I deeply appreciate Bridges’ reminder not to take sin lightly. The Son of God died for the little sins we often entertain and tolerate. (See my full review here!)
3. Becoming Elisabeth Elliot– Ellen Vaughn
This book was a delight to read! Once I started it, I could not put it down. I loved learning about Elisabeth’s earlier life and seeing the story of operation Auca through her point of view. The book is moving, inspiring, and edifying. Vaughn did an outstanding job telling Elisabeth’s story.
4. Spurgeon on Persevering Through Trials – Jason K. Allen
Like the other volumes in the series, Spurgeon on Persevering Through Trials is delightful! It is full of biblical encouragement that points to the Lord of hope and the Father of mercies. Through these sermons, Spurgeon explains the purpose and benefits of our pain, its brevity, Christ’s presence through it all, and the eternal glory and joy that awaits us. (See my full review here!)
5. Call the Sabbath a Delight – Walter Chantry
My pastor recommended this book to me, and it is excellent! I have been confused about the sabbath for a long time. Should New Testament Christians still do it? Is it on Saturday, Sunday, or whatever day is most convenient? What are we allowed to do or not do? This book provides the answer to these questions and makes a solid biblical case for keeping the Sabbath. I learned a lot and highly recommend it!
6. Holiness – J.C Ryle
Holiness by J.C. Ryle is an incredibly well-written, theologically packed book! It is one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and I can’t recommend it enough. Reading this book really encouraged me to examine myself and pursue holiness as never before.
7. The Doctrine of Repentance – Thomas Watson
Thomas Watson is my favorite puritans. I have read three of his books, and I have been tremendously blessed by them. This book is fantastic! It is not just one of the best books I have read this year; it is one of the best books I have ever read! Watson explains what repentance is, what is not, why we should pursue it, and its benefits with theological precision. It is a must-read book!
8. Scribes and Scripture – John D. Meade, Peter J. Gurry
Meade and Gurry did a fantastic job with Scribes and Scripture, and I highly recommend it! The explanations are clear and easy to understand, and the content is fascinating. I enjoyed it so much that when I reached part three, I read it in one sitting because I could not put the book down. This book will educate you, build your confidence in the Bible and equip you to defend it, and deepen your wonder of the God who orchestrated every step of the journey. Again, I highly recommend it! (See my full review here!)
9. Songs of Suffering – Joni Eareckson Tada
I cannot praise Songs of Sufferings enough, and I highly recommend it! This devotional deserves to be in your library and regularly visited as you experience new seasons of sorrow. Don’t only read the devotional; learn the hymns, memorize them, and practice singing glorious praises to our God amidst adversity.(Read my full review here!)
10. Into His Presence – Tim Chester
Chester did an amazing job with Into His Presence, and I sincerely enjoyed reading it. As expected, the prayers are beautiful, rooted in Scripture, inspiring, convicting, and soul-stirring. The book also has a beautiful and durable hardcover design that should withstand the repeated use it deserves.
Honorable Mentions
I had a hard time picking my top ten books (as usual), and I must mention these five additional books that I really enjoyed: The Treasure Principle and Managing God’s Money by Randy Alcorn, Keep a Quiet Heart by Elisabeth Elliot, When Prayer is a Struggle, and Atomic Habits by James Clear.
