Let Me Be a Woman

What is a woman? A question that was a no-brainer only a few years ago has now become a stumbling block for many. Whether it is because gender is fluid or we are not biologists, it is now controversial to define a woman. But while culture is confused, Scripture is abundantly clear on womanhood. And in Let Me Be a Woman, Elisabeth Elliot explains what it biblically means to be a woman. More specifically what it means to be a Christian woman.

She says, “we are called to be women. The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian does make me a different kind of woman. For I have accepted God’s idea of me, and my whole life is an offering back to Him of all that I am and all that He wants me to be.”

Elliot grounds her definition of a woman on the Creator of women and suggests we must first know Him to know ourselves. Then she explains God’s will and design for His daughters in all areas of life. These include singleness, sex, marriage, submission, and femininity.

Elliot wrote this book for her daughter, who was about to marry. And I enjoyed the candid and intimate tone of the book. It was my first time reading literature on femininity, and I adored it. Elisabeth Elliot shares many principles and advice on womanhood and femininity with grace, beauty, and biblical accuracy.

As a former tomboy, wannabe transgender, and feminist (in that order), I appreciate women like Elisabeth Elliot, who unabashedly teach and encourage other women to accept, love, and enjoy God’s role and design for women.

Let Me Be a Woman is another excellent book by Elisabeth Elliot, and I highly recommend it! Not only did I learn a lot from this book, but I also got a sweet taste of Titus 2 ministry that I long to experience.
