The book of Psalms is one of my favorite books in the Bible. I love how the psalmists express God’s truth with such beauty and elegance. They cover a wide range of emotions such as lament, joy, hope, praise, repentance that stir our souls profoundly. So I was glad to discover and read Ever in thy Sight: 31 Devotions on the Psalms by Abraham Kuyper.
Abraham Kuyper was a Prime Minister of the Netherlands and the founder of the Free University of Amsterdam. According to Al Mohler, he is one of the most significant protestant thinkers in the last 150 years.
Kuyper wrote hundreds of meditations from various books of the Bible. James De Jong collected and translated his reflections on the psalms because “Abraham Kuyper’s meditations on the Psalms bring people into communion with God. They share his beatific vision of the God of grace for all who truly come to Him.”
Ever in thy Sight begins with an introduction to Abraham Kuyper and has 31 chapters or devotions. The book has a unique format in which the Psalms are written on black paper while the devotions are on cream or white paper. Each devotion focuses on one or two verses that are printed in white letters, while the remainder of the Psalm is in grey letters. The chapters are about two or three pages each and easy to read.
I enjoyed reading Kuyper’s reflections on the Psalms. They were deep, insightful, and loaded with precious truths from the Holy Scriptures. It made me stop and meditate on some verses I previously breezed through and provided me with a lot of food for thought.
If you are looking for a devotional, I gladly recommend Ever in thy Sight! Kuyper’s reflections will inspire you, edify you, and draw you closer to the Lord.
