5 Timeless Truths to Hold on to During Trials

Life is a journey that often takes us through valleys and wilderness. It is usually at that time that we are most vulnerable to the attack of the enemy. He tries to use our wilderness seasons to turn us away from God by whispering lies in our ears.

When I first entered a wilderness season last year, my mind was swamped with lies such as God didn’t care about me, or things would never get better. Those lies were enticing, and I even believed some of them. But God tore them down with these five timeless truths.

1. God is good

And the Lord passed before Him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth

Exodus 34:6 NKJV

When bad things happen, it is easy to doubt that God is good; I have been in such a situation before. But the truth is God is good even when life is not, even when life doesn’t make any sense.

God sees far more than we do and makes decisions from a much broader perspective. Whereas we only see a thread, God sees the whole fabric. So, when He let us fall under trials, it is not because He is not good. It is because He sees things we don’t and understand things we can’t.

As David said in Psalm 27:13 NKJV, I would have despaired if I didn’t believe in the goodness of the Lord. And because God was good and merciful, I knew my trials would not last forever. As the people say: God is good all the time; all the time, God is good!

2. God is faithful

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

When I lost my job and struggled to make ends meet, I stopped believing in God’s faithfulness. I was going deep in debt, and I couldn’t see how He was providing for me as He said in His word. But the truth is God is faithful! He has been faithful for thousands of years and isn’t going to stop just for you or me.

When you change your perspective to look at what you have instead of what you lack, then you can see and appreciate God’s faithfulness in your life. And if you are waiting on a promise He made to you, be assured that it shall come to pass. Even if the situation seems hopeless, God will come through.

The Bible says that God is always faithful even when we are faithless. It’s who He is, and He cannot deny Himself (2 Tim 2:13).

3. God is powerful

But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I come across huge obstacles, I begin to think they are more significant than God. For example, in my struggle with unemployment, I once believed that I would never get a job in my field; too much time had passed since I first obtained my degree, and it was too late, even for God.

However, out of the blue, I got an interview for a position I hadn’t even applied for, and I eventually got a job offer. It taught me this truth that God is more powerful than any people or circumstances in our life. I remembered the great wonders God had performed previously and felt silly for believing He couldn’t give me a job.

Nothing is impossible for the almighty God. If your situation gets hopeless and you get tempted to give up, remember that God can do anything. His hand is not too short that He can’t save you (Isaiah 59:1), and no mountain or obstacle is greater than our God.

4. God is on our side

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

Romans 8:31-32

There are have been times during my trials when I wondered if God was really for me. Things kept getting worse, and doors kept closing; it was like God had handed me to the enemy on a silver platter. But the truth is no matter how bad things get, God is always on our side, and He is fighting for us.

Sometimes He fights for us visibly like when a wall in our path begins to crumble, or enemies get defeated. But more often, He fights for us in subtle ways, like giving us the strength to face another day, comforting us in the still of the night when we cry out our pain or giving us peace.

God fights for us and protects us in countless ways that we don’t know nor conceive. With Him on our side fighting our battles, we are more than conquerors, and no one can stand against us (Romans 8:37)

5.  God is by our side

Even thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

Sometimes in the wilderness, God can be astoundingly quiet. Many times when I prayed and longed to hear His voice and feel His presence, it was like He wasn’t there. I thought that I was facing my trials all alone, but the truth is, God is always by our side, and we are never without Him; His silence is not a sign of His absence.

When I struggled with loneliness and thought I had no one, Jesus was there for me. He was my comforter, my best friend, my confidant, my strength, and my everything. Sometimes I could feel His presence so powerfully I couldn’t think, and other times He was quiet and distant, but either way, He was always by my side.

No matter how lonely we feel in the wilderness, or how far off God seems, He is still there with us. He is always by our side, and we never go through any trial or face any challenge by our lonesome (Isaiah 43:2)

I hope this post encouraged you, and these timeless truths about God will set in deep in your heart and become a weapon to cut through the lies of the enemy.

 Grace and peace to you!

Thank you for sharing this blog post and your experiences. I love how you used and coined the term “wilderness seasons” where we can be exposed and vulnerable should we not have the proper protection: faith in God. I also really love how you described God’s amazing characteristics: God is good, faithful, on our side, by our side and powerful. Amen!!!
